Treatment

Collagen Stimulators

A collagen stimulator in Dubai is an injection that helps your skin make more of its own collagen, so it looks firmer over a few months.

Has your skin started to look thinner, softer or a little hollow, even though you take good care of it? From our late 20s, the body makes less collagen each year. Collagen is the protein that keeps skin firm and springy. As it fades, cheeks can flatten, the jawline can lose its sharp edge and fine crepey lines can appear. Sun, stress and weight changes can speed this up.

Collagen stimulators, also called biostimulators, are injectable treatments that encourage your skin to make more of its own collagen. They do not freeze muscles like anti-wrinkle injections, and most of them do not simply fill a line like a hyaluronic acid filler. Instead, the change builds slowly over weeks to months, so the result looks like your own skin on a good day.

Key Benefits

The main benefit is firmer, thicker-looking skin and a gentle return of lost support, especially in the cheeks, temples and jawline. Because your own collagen does the work, the change is gradual. Friends tend to say you look well rather than “done”. Some products can also be spread more thinly to improve skin quality on the face, neck or hands.

Results can last longer than many other injectables. Depending on the product, the studies show effects lasting from about a year to around two years. Results vary from person to person, and collagen keeps fading with age, so you may need top-up sessions later.

Who Needs This

Collagen stimulators suit adults with early to moderate signs of ageing. This includes mild hollowing in the cheeks or temples, a softer jawline, or skin that has started to look thin and crepey. They also suit people who prefer a slow, natural change over a sudden one. People who have lost weight and noticed their face looks more tired are often a good fit.

They are not the right choice if you want instant results for an event next week, or a large lift of heavy, loose skin. They are also not used in the lips. Our doctor will look at your face and talk honestly with you about whether a collagen stimulator, a different injectable or an energy-based treatment would suit you better.

How It Works

The product is placed with a fine needle or a blunt cannula in the deep layer of the skin, or just under it. It contains tiny particles that the body treats as a small, controlled trigger. Your skin’s repair cells, called fibroblasts, gather around these particles and slowly lay down new collagen. In this way, the particles act like a scaffold for your own tissue.

Over the next few months, your body slowly breaks the particles down and clears them away. The new collagen stays for a while after that, which is why results build over time and can last after the product has gone. Each product type works in a slightly different way, so we explain these differences below. Different kinds of Collagen Stimulators have different kinds of effects.

Collagen Stimulators Information

The Product Types We May Discuss

“Collagen stimulator” is a group name, not a single product. The products below are made from different materials, and the evidence behind each one is different. Our doctor will tell you which product is being used, why it suits you, and what it can and cannot do.

Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), such as Radiesse. Radiesse is made by Merz, a German company. It contains tiny smooth spheres of calcium hydroxylapatite, a mineral that is also found naturally in bone, held in a soft gel. The gel gives some lift straight away. Over the next months it is absorbed, and new collagen forms around the spheres. In the US, Radiesse is approved for deep folds such as the lines from nose to mouth, for the backs of the hands and, in its lidocaine form, for jawline contour. It is not used in the lips or around the eyes. Unlike hyaluronic acid filler, it cannot be dissolved with an enzyme, so careful planning matters.

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), such as Sculptra. Sculptra is made by Galderma, a Swiss company. It comes as a powder that is mixed with sterile water before use. It does not fill straight away. Any early fullness is mostly water, which fades within days. The real change comes over the following weeks and months as your skin builds collagen. In the US, Sculptra is approved for smile lines, other facial wrinkles and cheek wrinkles. It is usually given as a course of sessions, and in studies results lasted up to about two years.

Polydioxanone (PDO) microspheres, such as Ultracol. Ultracol is made by Ultra V, a Korean company. It is made of PDO, the same dissolvable material used in medical stitches and thread lifts. It is not PLLA. Ultracol 100 uses smaller particles for skin quality, and Ultracol 200 uses larger particles for deeper support. The particles dissolve within about 4 to 6 months. Ultracol is newer, and far fewer independent studies have been published on it than on Radiesse or Sculptra.

Your Appointment, Step by Step

Your first visit starts with a consultation. Our doctor asks about your health, medicines, past treatments and any fillers or threads you have had before. Your face is then checked at rest and from several angles, and photos are taken for your records. If you are suitable, you will agree on a product, the areas to treat and a likely number of sessions before anything is injected.

On the day, your skin is cleansed well, and numbing cream may be applied. Some products also contain a local anaesthetic. The product is placed with a fine needle or a blunt cannula, and the treatment usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. Afterwards we give you written aftercare advice and book your next visit.

Possible Side Effects and Risks

Most side effects are mild and short-lived. These include redness, swelling, tenderness and bruising where the product was placed. They usually settle within a few days to a week. Some people can feel the product under the skin for a short time.

Small lumps, called nodules, are the most talked-about risk with collagen stimulators. Some can be felt but not seen, and many soften with time or treatment. In reviews of published studies, nodules happened in a small number of people, and the rate depends on the product, the area, the depth and the technique. Rarely, a firm, inflamed lump called a granuloma can form months or even years later. These may need medical treatment, which can take time.

A rare but serious risk with any facial injectable is that the product enters or presses on a blood vessel. This can damage the skin and, very rarely, affect eyesight. If you notice severe pain, skin that turns pale, white, blue or blotchy, or any change in your vision during or after treatment, tell us or seek urgent medical help straight away. Infection is also possible, which is why we use a careful sterile technique.

Who Should Not Have It

Please do not book if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have an infection, cold sores, acne or another skin problem in the area to be treated. We will also need to talk with you first if you have a history of keloid or raised scars, a bleeding problem, an autoimmune condition or serious allergies, including to lidocaine. Let us know about any blood-thinning medicines, recent dental work, vaccines or illness. We also need to know about any filler, thread or permanent filler you have had before in the same area.

Planning Your Collagen Stimulator in Dubai

Treatment Plans

Your plan depends on your face, your goals and the product chosen. Someone with early skin thinning may need a light, spread-out treatment to improve skin quality. Someone with clear hollowing in the cheeks or temples may need deeper placement for support. Many plans combine a collagen stimulator with other treatments over several months.

Number of Sessions

PLLA treatments such as Sculptra are usually done as a course, often 2 to 3 sessions, with some people needing up to 4. CaHA treatments such as Radiesse often need 1 or 2 sessions for the first result. For PDO products such as Ultracol, the plan depends on the area and the product size. Our doctor will suggest a number that suits you, and we review your progress before adding more.

Time Between Sessions

Sessions are usually spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart. This gives your skin time to respond, so we can see how much new collagen has formed before deciding on the next step. Results build gradually over around 3 months. After the first course, a top-up may be suggested every 12 to 24 months, depending on the product and how your skin responds.

In Combination With & Alternative Treatments

In Combination With

Collagen stimulators work well alongside treatments that target other layers of the skin. Anti-wrinkle injections soften lines caused by movement, while skin boosters improve hydration and glow on the surface. Energy-based treatments such as Ultherapy Prime, Sunny RF or Virtue RF microneedling also encourage collagen in a different way. Our doctor will plan the order and the timing so the treatments support each other safely.

Alternatives

If you want a change you can see straight away, a hyaluronic acid dermal filler may suit you better, and it can be dissolved if needed. If your main concern is skin quality rather than volume, skin boosters or energy-based treatments may be enough on their own. Not sure where to start? An Aura Skin Analysis or a consultation can help you choose.

Investment Needed

The cost depends on the product, how many syringes or vials are needed and how many sessions are in your plan. For example, Sculptra is priced per vial and is often given as a course, while Radiesse is priced per syringe. We will give you a clear quote for the full plan at your consultation before anything is injected. Pricing really depends on the complexity of the case, the amounts the kind of product used. It is usually AED 500-5000.

I’d say this is probably the most Korean-style clinic you can find in Dubai (it really feels like visiting a clinic in Korea.) Recovery & Downtime

Most people go back to work the next day, and some go back the same day. Swelling, tenderness and redness are common for 2 to 3 days, and bruising can take up to a week or two to fade. With PLLA, the early fullness you see on the day is mostly water and fades within a few days. This is normal, and it does not mean the treatment has failed. The real change builds slowly over the following weeks. If you have an event coming up, plan your treatment at least 2 weeks before.

Aftercare Instructions

For the first 24 hours, keep the area clean, avoid make-up and don’t touch the treated skin more than you need to. Avoid hard exercise, saunas, steam rooms and hot yoga for 2 to 3 days. A cool pack wrapped in a clean cloth can ease swelling. Avoid facials, face massage devices and strong pressure on the area for about 2 weeks, and protect your skin from the sun.

If you have had PLLA, our doctor may ask you to massage the area gently for a few days. A common plan is 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days. Please follow the exact advice you are given, because it differs between products. Contact us straight away if you notice growing pain, skin colour changes, a hard or hot lump, or any change in your vision.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a collagen stimulator and a filler?

A hyaluronic acid filler adds volume straight away by holding water in a gel. A collagen stimulator works more slowly. It encourages your skin to make its own collagen over weeks to months. Radiesse sits in the middle, because its gel gives some lift on the day and collagen builds later.

Is Ultracol the same as Sculptra?

No. Ultracol is made of polydioxanone (PDO) microspheres, the same type of dissolvable material used in medical stitches and threads. Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). Both aim to encourage collagen, but they are different materials, and Sculptra has many more published studies behind it.

When will I see results?

It depends on the product. With Radiesse you may see some lift straight away, with more change over the following months. With Sculptra and Ultracol, the change is gradual and is usually clearer after around 2 to 3 months. That is why we review your skin before planning the next session.

How long do results last?

This varies by product and person. Radiesse results can last about a year or more in many people. Sculptra studies have shown results lasting up to about two years after a full course. There is less long-term data for Ultracol. Your skin keeps ageing, so top-ups may be suggested later.

Does it hurt?

Most people feel pressure and some stinging. We can apply numbing cream first, and some products also contain a local anaesthetic. Using a blunt cannula in some areas can mean fewer needle points.

Can the result be reversed?

Not in the same way as a hyaluronic acid filler, which can be dissolved with an enzyme. Collagen stimulators cannot be dissolved this way. Lumps can usually be managed, but this can take time. This is why we plan carefully, start with a conservative amount and review your progress.

What are the main risks?

Common effects are swelling, tenderness and bruising for a few days. Less often, small lumps called nodules can form, and rarely a firm, inflamed lump called a granuloma can appear months later. A rare but serious risk is the product affecting a blood vessel. Seek help straight away if you notice severe pain, pale or blotchy skin, or any change in your vision.

Can it be used under the eyes or in the lips?

Collagen stimulators are not used in the lips. Radiesse is not used around the eyes. Treatment of the under-eye area needs a careful choice of product and technique, so our doctor will advise you at your consultation. See our Under-Eye Collagen Booster page for more.

Who should not have a collagen stimulator?

You should not have it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if there is an infection or active skin problem in the area. We will need to talk first if you have keloid scarring, an autoimmune condition, a bleeding problem or serious allergies, or if you have had permanent filler in the same area.
