If you are suffering from inflamed acne, which is often protruding in a bump and painful to the touch, then often topical treatment is not enough. Extraction of acne sebum may not be possible either. Standard practice in Korea is to get an anti-acne inflammation shot. This will cause the inflammation to reduce drastically over the next few days. Without this kind of shot, that inflammation under your skin would stay. Please note that this treatment is usually done for inflamed acne where you can feel growth under the skin and touching it feels painful. If this is not the case, then extraction and/or topical medication may be a better option. That being said, do not leave inflamed acne untreated. If left untreated, it can stay on your face for several months and eventually turn into an acne scar.
How It Works
It is a simple procedure where the doctor injects a small about of the corticosteroid often known simply as cortisone shot, steroid shot or TA shot. It may be composed of triamcinolone acetonide. It is diluted and it is not an anabolic steroid like those used for muscle growth. This injection is usually not painful, takes usually only 2-3 seconds to complete per inflamed acne and does not require aftercare usually. It reduces pain, redness, welling and flattens out the pimple (acne) over the 24-48 hours or slightly longer.

This type of TA shot can be done by itself or combined with prescribed topical medication. In some cases with related reoccurring acne, you may be prescribed more long term care medication.

Normally, if you have inflamed acne, you only need to get this kind of injection once per area.
Time Between Sessions
If the inflamed acne area was injected and it went down for the next 7 days but there is still visible inflammation, you may return to the clinic for a possible follow up shot.
Recovery & Downtime
There is no downtime but your body needs time to finalize the internal healing of the inflamed area. The inflammation should go down in 2-3 days but it may take up to 7 days.
Aftercare Instructions
Make sure that your bedsheets and pillow sheets are washed every 2-3 days, you are cleansing and properly taking care of your face daily and that you cut down on sugars and processed foods. Try to minimize your stress level as well. If instructed to by our doctor, then apply topical medication as prescribed.

A: Possible timeline:
Highest Inflammation appears in week one. Because the cyst goes deep into your skin, it may not for a head that can be used for extraction. If everything goes well then in week 2-3, your immune system will start to break down the infection by attacking dead skin cells, oils and bacteria. At this point, the pain usually starts to go away but you still have the red acne on your face. If things continue to go well then the bump on your face gradually flattens in weeks 4-6. However, it will often leave a pitted scar or dark mark. This is why you shouldn’t let an infection on your face go untreated. The longer the inflamed acne stays on your face, the higher the risk of discoloration or a structural scar. It risks hyperpigmentation and the risk of the infection spreading.
Q: Does topical over the counter creams work on this kind of inflamed acne?
A: Although then can help, a TA shot will get the problem under control in a much faster and stronger way. Usually, over the counter medication is not enough. If anything, you would need prescription medication and even then, a shot would be more advisable in many cases.
