The medicine name for Botox® is onabotulinumtoxinA. The treatment itself is most commonly referred to as Botox in the same way a tissue is commonly called a Kleenex or a photocopy is called a Xerox. Your Appointment, Step by Step
First, our doctor asks about your health, any medicines and any past injections. We then watch how you frown, smile and raise your brows, because every face moves differently. Together we agree on the areas, the brand and an estimated number of units, so you know the cost before you start.
Your skin is cleansed and the injection points are marked. If you like, numbing cream can be applied first. The injections take only a few minutes. You can then go back to your day, and we book a check about 2 weeks later to see how the result has settled.
Who Should Not Have It
Please tell us if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding, as treatment is not recommended. It is also not suitable if you have a condition that affects nerves and muscles, such as myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, or if you have had a reaction to botulinum toxin before.
Some medicines can make the effect stronger, including certain antibiotics called aminoglycosides and some muscle relaxants. Blood thinners can make bruising more likely. We will not inject skin that is infected or inflamed in the area. If you have an important event coming up, plan your treatment at least 2 to 3 weeks before.
Please note: some people develop immunity or are immune to Botox. This means that Botox does not work on them the same way as it works on others. Some people develop this over time. If you are this type of person, you will need to undergo a series of trials to see if any existing Botox has an effect on you or if you are fully immune.
Planning Your Botox Treatment
Treatment Plans
Many people begin with one or more upper face areas, such as frown lines and forehead lines together. If you are new to treatment, a lighter first dose lets you see how your face responds. We then adjust at your review. Anti-wrinkle injections can also be one part of a wider plan with skin boosters or energy-based treatments for skin quality and firmness. Skin Botox is also very common. This is when we place small amount of Botox over a wide area to tighten up the skin.
Number of Sessions
One session is enough to see the effect, which usually lasts around 3 to 4 months but it depends totally on your case. To keep the result, most people repeat the treatment 2 to 4 times a year. Some find that they need a little less product over time.
Please note: some people’s body eliminate Botox at a faster rate. These people may need repeated treatments sooner.
Time Between Sessions
Leave at least 2-3 months between treatments of the same area. Treating more often does not improve the result and may raise the small chance of your body becoming less responsive to the toxin.

Recovery & Downtime
There is very little downtime. Small bumps at the injection points usually go within an hour. Some people get a light headache or a small bruise that fades over a few days. You can wear make-up again later the same day if your skin is not irritated. Please note: you may get temporary bumps that arise from injections.
Aftercare Instructions
For the rest of the day, don’t rub or massage the treated area and avoid hard exercise, saunas and steam rooms. Try not to lie flat for the first 4 hours. Avoid facials, face massage and tight headwear on the treated area for about 2 weeks. If you notice a drooping eyelid, double vision or any trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing, contact us straight away or seek urgent medical help.

Is Botox the same as anti-wrinkle injections?
Mostly, yes. Botox is one brand of botulinum toxin type A, made by Allergan. People use the word for all anti-wrinkle injections, the same way people say "Hoover" for any vacuum. Other brands, such as Xeomin, Nabota and Botulax, work in the same way. We will always tell you which brand you are having.
Does it hurt?
Most people describe it as a quick pinch. The needle is very fine and each injection takes a second or two. We can apply numbing cream first if you are nervous.
When will I see results?
You may notice a change after 2 to 3 days. The full effect usually shows at around 2 weeks. That is why we ask you to wait 2 weeks before judging the result or booking a review.
How long does it last?
For most people, results last around 3 to 4 months. The movement then comes back slowly. Stronger muscles, a very active lifestyle and the area treated can all affect how long it lasts.
Will I look frozen?
Not if the dose is right for your face. Our aim is a softer, more rested look where you can still frown, smile and raise your eyebrows. If this is your first time, we often start with a lighter dose and adjust at your review.
What are the side effects?
The most common are small red bumps, mild swelling, a bruise or a light headache, which usually settle within a few days. Less often, a nearby muscle can be affected, causing a heavy brow or a drooping eyelid. This is temporary but can last a few weeks. In very rare cases the effect can spread further. If you have trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing, get medical help straight away.
Who should not have it?
Please do not book if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a condition that affects your nerves and muscles, such as myasthenia gravis. We also check your medicines, because some antibiotics and muscle relaxants can increase the effect. We will not inject skin that is infected or broken out in the treated area.
Can it slim my jaw or stop sweating?
It can be used for both, but these are different treatments from wrinkle softening. Jaw slimming relaxes the large chewing muscle, and the change builds slowly over several weeks. Underarm sweating is treated with small injections into the skin. Our doctor will explain how each one works and whether it suits you.
Can I stop having Botox once I start?
Yes. If you stop, the muscle simply goes back to the way it moved before. Your lines will not become worse than they would have been without treatment.
Can my body stop responding to it?
It is rare, but a small number of people make antibodies that weaken the effect over time. Spacing treatments at least 3 months apart and using the lowest dose that works helps lower this risk. If a treatment ever seems weaker than usual, tell us.
